About Dr. James Freije

Dr. James Freije prepared for his medical career at Villanova 
University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. After graduating summa cum 
laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, he went on to attend 
medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. 
Graduating in 1985, Dr. Freije earned a Doctor in Medicine and 
completed both his internship and residency at the University of 
Vermont Medical Center in Burlington in general surgery and 
otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. He fulfilled a fellowship with 
the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Advanced Training in 
Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery. In the same year, Dr. Freije was 
also named a Fellow of the American Academy of and Otolaryngology-Head 
and Neck Surgery. 

For the next eight years, Dr. James Freije was an Assistant and 
Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at several institutions, 
including Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania; 
the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee; and at SUNY Health 
Science Center in Syracuse. He also served on staff at several 
hospitals in Hershey, Milwaukee and Syracuse, including an appointment 
as Chief of Otolaryngology at Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center 
in Milwaukee. During his years as a teaching physician, Dr. James 
Freije was a member of the Society of University and Otolaryngologists 
Head and Neck Surgeons and was named a Fellow of the American College 
of Surgeons in 1995. 

In 1999, Dr. James Freije took leave from the medical profession to go 
back to school. He graduated in 2001 with a Master of Public Health 
from SUNY University at Albany in New York. He returned to the field 
of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in 2002 and was appointed to 
work at two hospitals in northern Pennsylvania: Robert Packer Hospital 
in Sayre, part of Guthrie Health, and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial 
Hospital in Wellsboro, part of the Laurel Health System. During his 
time at Guthrie, Dr. James Freije served on the Editorial Board for 
the Guthrie Journal and on the Guthrie Clinic Board of Directors. 

At present, Dr. James Freije is an Associate of Otolaryngology-Head 
and Neck Surgery at Mount Nittany Physicians Group in State College,

of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and serves on the Mount Nittany 
Health System Board as an Elected Physician Member and at the Mount 
Nittany Medical Center as a Cancer Liaison Representative.
